Dissapearing stars? Above Orion, England.?

Now, this is going to sound very strange but...

I was just out having a smoke, when some thing caught my eye, i don't know what, but something caused me to look up at the sky. I'm guessing it was a flash of light or movement, i don't know.

Anyways, looking up, slightly above and to the right of the constellation Orion, there there two fairly bright stars. Kinda in line with each other, at a slant.

I watched them, because they were unusually bright, and to my amazement, they dimmed...them disappeared.

Now, i'm pretty sure stars don't do that, and i am very very certain it wasn't a plane, the stars were stationary, plus no flashing lights that would tell it was a plane.

I don't have much knowledge about astrology, but if someone could explain it to me, that would be great!

oh and, i'm in the UK.

Are you sure they were absolutely stationary? If not, they could have been satellites. Probably not meteors, which of course don't look stationary at all. When did you see them? Perhaps the most puzzling thing about your account is that there were two side-by-side; that makes any of the following explanations very improbable, increasing the chances that they were planes or some such.

I think your observation seems most like an iridium flare from a satellite (see references). But they would move somewhat; if you're sure they were absolutely stationary, that explanation would be ruled out.

If they were supernovae, that would be very exciting (they only occur in our galaxy once in over a century), but that doesn't seem to be the case. Supernovae typically dim on a much longer timescale (hours) than you're describing. Also there would probably be news reports about it already, and the chances of supernovae going off side-by-side are nil.

In any case, I'd recommend you look at a site such as this one:

to see if there were any satellites over your location when this happened. If you don't see anything, it might be worth investigating further!
